Here in France, if you take an insurance policy, you can't count on the company to tell the beneficiary. Most of these companies won't tell the beneficiary, just to keep the money. So you either have to tell the beneficiaries (your wife and your mistresses...), or you have to tell someone. Here in France, the only way to do this efficiently is to write down a will that you deposit at your notary. The notaries in France have a central data base that can be checked by any French notary.
I bet that in other countries, you can't count either on the company to give the money to the beneficiaries. They will only do so if the are compeled to do it by a third party.
