I've heard rumors that the COMEX defaulted on its gold delivery in December.

Looks like they are trying to bait newbies into the markets.
"We'll get rich playing the shortage".

The contracts already have force majeure clauses, allowing them to settle in currency.
When the LME had a similar problem in nickel (2006), they let industry get the physical metal and settled everyone else in cash.

I think the average retail buyer can easily find the amount he wants.
The online shops I follow aren't indicating a shortage.

You might be right. APMEX seems to be business as usual. However, the UK mint ran out of gold coins.

If there is a physical gold shortage, then the shortage of silver is even worse.
