Re: Thai Wives - Expat Perspective
You have to give props to these two for being able to retire at such a young age. To do so and be able to live a comfortable lifestyle is no easy task.djfourmoney wrote:Enjoy - http://www.retireearlylifestyle.com/thai_wives.htm
I'm always interested in what other foreigners have to say about marriages in Asia. This is obviously an old article because the dollar was much stronger when it was written but this is immaterial. These are two foreigners and neither are married to a Thai or a member of the Lisu tribe. Thus, their own perspective is coming from a different secondhand information. In this particular article the pair focus on those foreigners who are paying for their women, whether it be in the form of a dowry or a rent-a-ho turned wife. The "typical first-date conversation" is also slanted towards their friend having a poor girl with abysmal English skills and very little education.
It is easiest to focus on men paying for their women and dealing with crazy issues and cultural dissimilarities. A foreigner paying for a wife, paying for sex, taking care of the families financial issues, all for the privilege of having a subservient, supposedly timid wife is of great interest to westerners as this is much different than what takes place in their own societies. What I rarely see is interviews or articles about western men with educated, decent Thai women. Tell a westerner you met your Thai wife through a friend and she is a doctor, successful business woman, or the manager of a hotel and the relationship parallels those that take place back home. Perhaps there are few articles about these types of relationships because they're a rarity or perhaps it's because there's no wow factor. Nevertheless, this was an interesting read coming from these two long-time expats.
