Man in prison for arguing with a Filipina

Post by walrusface »

A foreigner in the Philippines arrested and imprisoned for 3 years (and counting) just for arguing with a Filipina! As someone who was thinking of moving there in the future, now I'm not so sure.

Philippines has various crazy laws, it's feminist #1 country in Asia. However this law, see link above, exists already since 2004.

Boys are not protected, for example sexual misuse within the Catholic Church.
I read there are about 250 priests under investigation in Philippines, but not even a single clergyman was ever sent to jail.

Philippines took over too much feminist legal stuff from USA, similar but not that bad is also South Korea.
Too much feminism and also too much Christianity in both countries.

It seems like this bit "Psychological or emotional abuse" is what this guy was locked up for. She said if he gave her several million pesos she would drop the charges and the judge went along with it. "Emotional abuse" is so vague and without clear evidence it is crazy to think you could be locked up for that.

It would be good to know more details about this case.
Never heard about or experienced myself such an issue during my many travels to Philippines.

Anyway, most Filipinos (men and women) do not care much about such laws. Likely don't even know that such laws exist.

If a Filipino man has nothing, you cannot take away anything from him, and I wonder how a low-income Filipina woman can even find a lawyer to be willing to work on such a case without paying a rather high money deposit in advance for his fees.

However foreign men, meeting local Filipinas who know how to make use out of foreign men, are surely a target as it is possible to extort money from them.
