Manila - Living there couple of months, high risk of crime?

Only time I had a problem was when I was staying at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Ermita. I was walking from the hotel over to a mall so I could find an internet cafe and grab lunch. Some guy ran up behind me and patted my back pocket to see if he could get my wallet. He didn't get my wallet because I carry it in my front pocket. The guy ran off looking for his next victim.
