As Asia becomes increasingly westernized the only outcome is an increase in social problems. I'll scratch Japan, Korea and Taiwan off the list of countries I want to visit.

Not necessarily. I doubt these rich NE Asian nations are going to suffer a big jump in violent crime, drug use, illegitimacy, etc. just because people are deciding to forgo marriage. And I'm not sure 'westernization' is the correct word to characterize the changes taking place. People work hard and have independence now, both men and women. Technology gives them choices and they can tailor their lives to suit their own tastes. And women these days tend to prefer not being controlled by in-laws in case she does get married. Demographics are shifting, populations in these countries are aging very fast. Younger people still tend to follow tradition and care for their elders during their golden years. It will become an increasingly heavy burden as time passes and old replace young.

That reminds me of a stat from the USA I remember reading in one of the "Freakonomics" books. According to the author, once abortion become a much easier option to come by, violent crime rates began falling some 15-19 years later. The study speculated that some of the worst kids were those born to mothers who just didn't want to have them or were not prepared to have them in the first place. Once these kids are not born, things improved a couple decades down the line.
