For many people it's still a mystery why Austrian company OMV announced that consortium developing Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz-2 natural gas and oil field dropped the use of the proposed Nabucco-West pipeline.
No mystery at all! Ye, the main two bidders to transport the Azerbaijani gas (Shah Deniz-2) into Europe were Nabucco-West project and Trans-Adriatic pipeline (TAP). The volumes of Azerbaijani Shah Deniz gas to be transported into Europe in the near perspective is rather small (20 billion cubic meters) given the EU annual consumption of some 500 bcm. So from the very start it was plain clear for most energy experts that both projects related more politics than economy. I mean economically both projects appear to be highly doubtful.
Then more quite disgusting things added to those doubts. The Nabucco-West route was to take Azerbaijani gas from the Turkish border through Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary into Austria. I have always treated suspiciously those post-communist countries. During the epoch of "cold war" they got accustomed to manipulate Soviet Union. I have a strong feeling now they are trying to manipulate the EU and the EU investors and businessmen engaged in construction and whoever else!
It all started with Aliev..... Azerbaijani president Aliev had wanted investments from sponsors of both competing projects! His appetites were actually enormous, I should say! And then the four transit countries suddenly also voiced some "special transit costs"!! To evade this absolutely brazen manipulation Austria dropped it.
It's quite a nasty story imo. The reputation of Aliev has been drastically undermined since then. Though due to his American promoters there wasn't any big scandal about it.
Nabucco-West was dropped due to greediness of Aliev.
