Careful recommending people about venturing in the barrios and hitting public places such as gyms. Non-urban Colombian men are not that open-minded. They're extremely territorial, possessive, and jealous, especially when they see a foreigner who tries to force his way into an environment which (they believe) he has no business with.

One might be lucky and make a few hot friends after workout. One might not be so lucky and be spotted by the local kids who will "confront" them just because they dared approaching one of their ladies. For me, factors to consider are cost of rent, safety and transport. I would also prefer an area with less expats. I probably wouldn't even mind a more peripheral municipality.

What do you know about the different municipalities of Medellín?

Medellín looks nice but I do have my reservations. I read that it is getting filled up with expats who are driving up the cost of rent and bringing upon themselves the antipathy of many locals. This leads me to think that maybe it would be a better idea to choose a different city in Colombia. I want to go where European foreigners are rare and where I have a greater advantage with the ladies. I'm considering Pereira (which is sometimes described as a "Little Medellín" and has awesome hot springs in nearby Santa Rosa de Cabal) or even Armenia. I've also heard good things about Bucaramanga situated further east.

Honestly, @Lucas88, I have mixed feelings about Medellin. The first time I was there was to get married and I got there 2 nights before the wedding. My culture shock with the city was an impromptu "boys' night out" organised by my ex-wife's boss, who took me to a few bars in the Poblado. I was a bit jet-lagged and not in the mood to do anything crazy, but I did see quite a few head-turners and even got a bit embarrassed when my host started telling me to "take a bite".

Then of course I saw most of the city with my ex-wife, family and friends. Honestly, I wasn't overly impressed about the architecture: lots of cheap red bricks buildings everywhere made it almost look like a sunnier version of suburban England. We were lucky that those were President Uribe's. Uribe is a Paisa, whose brother was killed by the FARCs, and he did an excelent job keeping the militias out of town and improving Medellin's the safety profile by a lot. As I hear, now things are not as good as they used to be.

The best areas to live in Medellin proper are Laureles, south of the Estadio, and the northern part of Poblado, the areas in the red squares below.



Laureles has always been the upper class area of Medellin. It's quiet, leafy and relatively safe, with several commercial areas along Avenida Colombia, Calle 55 and Regional.

My ex-wife's maternal side family has an interesting history. They started off as one of Medellin's richest family, with several brothers involved in lucrative trades. One of said brothers, my ex-wife's grandpa, lost most of his fortune on a bad deal and never recovered. My ex-wife's family went from riches to rags but still managed to hold on to one of their houses in Laureles, where she was brought up. So the place I probably know the most is Laureles.

Poblado is the hip and happening place, but also the most expensive area of the whole of Medellin. I have seen some pretty upscale high-rise condominiums there and plenty of the classier nightlife. It's also quite teeming with expats. Better Laureles, in that sense.

From my experience here in Colombia (been here 5 months this year and another 6 months in 2016), it is very hard to join into the social culture here as a foreigner. Not only do you have to speak Spanish fluently, but you have to be on their same wavelength in terms of cultural norms / way of thinking. Just as in America, the normies fit in with everyone, well it's the same thing here. To be honest the women are hot here and the weather is nice here, but it's damn hard to make friends with Colombians as a gringo. Also, there's tons of Venezuelans who migrated (and are still migrating) to CO. Even though they speak Spanish, their culture in Venezuela is still much different than CO. I'm not sure if Colombians readily accept them in their social circles. I've still never been to Medellín but, whenever I'm in Latin America, I always try to appear as less "gringo" as possible (well, technically I'm not a gringo since I'm European). Integration is the aim. I associate exclusively with locals and avoid interaction with gringos (I dislike most Americans anyway). I speak nothing but Spanish all the time. In Peru, I was integrated into my girlfriend's family. I was therefore frequently treated like a local, not a foreigner. In Mexico, I stayed with friends and was introduced to a broader social circle through them. Wherever you are, you have to have some kind of meaningful ties (marriage, real friendships, community life, etc.) that root you to the host country in order to truly integrate. Obviously, in Latin American countries, fluency in the language is necessary for this. Fortunately, I'm fluent in Spanish since I studied it obsessively and then lived in Hispanic environments for years at a time.

Anyway, I'm not particularly interested in living in Medellín long term. I've heard about the gentrification due to the influx of expats and how many of the locals are pissed off that foreigners are driving up rent prices and making living in a good neighborhood more difficult for them. I don't want to be seen as yet another asshole expat and outsider making life worse for the natives of the city. I'd prefer to live in a smaller and less cosmopolitan city where there are far fewer foreigners and where locals are less likely to treat me with hostility.

Moreover, I would like to live in a place where I'm rarer as a European and therefore more attractive to local women. Medellín seems to be already saturated with Caucasian foreigners due to all of the expats and tourists and so I'd be merely another foreigner among many all competing for the attention of women. I wanna go somewhere where being a European guy turns heads due to the novelty and women pursue me as though I were a rare treasure.

I've been looking at Pereira, Armenia and Bucaramanga as possible alternatives to Medellín.

Fortunately, I'm not really interested in dating "high-end" Paisas. I couldn't care less about their lighter skin or their supposed social status. I much prefer dark-skinned Latinas and mestizas with a more rainforest Indian phenotype anyway. For me, artificial status hierarchies mean nothing. Even if I do get an urge to bang some Paisa barbie with big silicone titties, I'll just hire an escort for $50.
