This is completely insane. Russia gave a lessor punishment to p***y Riot who trespassed on a church and desecrated it. This same p***y Riot group had sex in public places and wasn't punished. Homosexuals who mind their own business will be punished by this law if seen in public. This is a classic example of looking for a scapegoat. While marriage falls apart throughout the Christian world because Christianity is a failed religion, unable to enforce morality among its own members, people in these areas will look for small groups to blame for their own failings; gays, Jews, or whoever. It's disgusting and pathetic.

It was a particular judge that did this, and Putin chimed in saying "I don't think that they should be judged so harshly for this". That probably carried some weight. Also, keep in mind, female = automatic leniency. BTW, at least one of them is out already.
Similar actions by a boy-band calling itself C**k Riot? They'd have been hanged in the church yard, on the spot.

The war isn't against gay men. It needs to be against lesbianism. Like those Femen losers who use pornography to advocate an end to prostitution and pornography. Yes, I do believe in freedom of speech but I am also, at the same time, against ostentatious displays of that lifestyle. What they possibly meant was men kissing each other or standing there with a poster or giving out brochures or teaching the kid that it is OK.
Again, freedom of speech in the US for example does not include freedom to promote underage encounters. I guess, there it includes not promoting gay lifestyle.

ladislav, I am sympathetic to what you are saying, but this isn't what this bill is about. You can do your own research to confirm. For example:

You're overlooking a long-standing debate between Soviet Russia and the US about the nature of freedom. The US is built around what's called "negative liberty" -- telling government no, it cannot prevent individuals from doing certain things they want to, such as give expresssion to whatever comes to mind. Soviet communism, and much of the rest of the world, argued that negative liberty is somewhat pointless. What's important is "positive liberty," giving individuals the freedom and social support to bring their best possible selves and lives to fruition. This often involves the state, or some other authority, trying to suppress certain behaviors that are regarded as broadly harmful to personal and social fulfillment, such as homosexuality.

So when you condemn Russia for prohibiting free speech, you're saying they should adopt a tradition that they have never had and have made cogent arguments against.

What some of you don't understand is that Russia has huge problem with negative population growth. In other words, there are WAY more Russians that die than being born! So homosexuality isn't helping much. And who told you that free speech should be used to brainwash people? Why don't we have "Straight people" parades? Why is PORN blocked in America, but gay parades are allowed? WTF? This is total craziness and how can you call America "nation under God" when crap like this happens?

gsjackson, the problem with your argument is that it renders the word "freedom" meaningless and can be used to justify any imaginable behavior approved of by the majority. Basically you are advocating tyranny of the majority, which is ironic considering that most here have minority views in their own country.

It's true that Russia and the Ukraine don't have much of a history of defending freedom. That's too bad. Since I am not a citizen of these countries, I have no right to criticize them. But I most certainly have a right to criticize members of this forum for supporting such anti-freedom views.

have2fly, homosexuality has a negligible effect on population growth. The valid argument against gay parades is pretty much the same as the argument against slut-walks, that they hurt public morals. I agree with this. If it were up to me, I would have a public dress code requiring everyone to cover from their collar bone to their knees (the standard of Orthodox Judaism) and I would prohibit public sexual displays of any kind (in public areas). This would prevent gay parades, slut-walks, and other such immoral displays without interfering with free speech.
