V For Vendetta Screened in China

I share Variety‘s surprise that V For Vendetta has been aired on television in China. The screening took place on Friday night and the film was apparently completely uncut.

I have no idea how many millions may have seen this story of a masked insurgent leading a revolution against a corrupt regime, and we can only guess what cultural impact it may – or may not – have had. Pretty soon, maybe, all of the cheap V masks won’t be just made in China.

So have things started to change in Chinese broadcasting? Xi Jinping assumed office as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China on November 15th and he may have brought a more liberal attitude with him…

…or perhaps V was a one-off. Time will tell.

Are you certain that the Beijing authorities believe that that movie is a self-portrait?

I'd imagine that they'd view it, as a foreign film, where the British govt is anti-Muslim (vis-a-vis anti-terrorist) to an extreme. And thus, it would have little meaning to the Chinese people vs those of western Europe, since Chinese Muslims are out of sight (westernmost Xinjiang province) & thus, out of mind.

Well it also has lines like "People shouldn't fear their governments; governments should fear their people." Plus the Guy Fawkes mask has become this international protest symbol, so I'd say it's a bid deal.

Yes, but I feel that the tone of the movie has this Americana (plus British/W European) appeal. Obviously, it's more of an 'A' level film but its tone can be likened to let's say "Escape from New York", where Kurt Russell's character was most definitely the outlaw anti-hero against the big bad corporatized govt. And from what I'd heard, those Carpenter films aren't banned in China. They see them as entertainment.

maybe the chinese elite didn´t understand the film as it is catoonish and metaphorical. maybe they think chinese people would not take this film serious as they have a totally different mentality.
