This is a rare Taiwanese film about the Japanese colonial period that's portrayed in a somewhat positive way. Previous films, such as Seediq Bale, was about the violent confrontation between Taiwanese aborigines and the Japanese colonial administration. In "Kano", the Japanese, Han-Taiwanese, and Aborigines are shown to be working together in a baseball team.
