First of all children learn their native language from their parents and other relatives next to them.
Does nobody of your family members speak to you in Chinese?

In schools at least in Europe, it is possible, often even obligatory to study a foreign language, in my case in High School, as native German speaker in Europe, it was English obligatory when 10 y/o, and another additional language of my choice when 12 y/o, in my case Latin/French, later on also Japanese.

American schools here in Japan also follow this way of studies, foreign languages at least 1, later on 2 or 3 are a must, otherwise how can you work as a foreigner in Japan or elsewhere in Asia?

And even if you stay in Europe, how can you deal with other Europeans for business and tourism without speaking foreign languages?

As a child of Chinese descent in Europe, you will choose Chinese as optional language, as a Japanese of course Japanese if you live in Europe with your parents. This makes these children almost bi-lingual after university. It gives these Asian-Europeans strong advantages when applying for jobs related with Asia.

Unlike Japanese, Chinese and Indians are known to me to speak perfectly their own native language and English and often other languages too.

It seems, foreign language studies are rather neglected in the USA which is very regrettable.

Good to know you are now in China and I am sure your basic Chinese knowledge will strongly improve, maybe also you might consider to learn how to write, which is very important as spoken Chinese only makes you an illiterate.
Therefore, why did you Yohan and Terrence and MarcosZeitola compare Chinese girls to American girls? That was totally and utterly FALSE and WRONG.
Show me this thread where I wrote a comment like this!
Did you not read my comments in this thread? Or my comments in other threads?

I never compare Chinese (or other women, Thai, Japanese, Malay, Cambodian....) with American women, as I consider US-girls as the deepest point of the scale anyway. Nothing below anymore, any foreign woman might be better.

I said several times in my comments, it is better NOT to compare Chinese women with US-women, but to compare them with other Asian women.

In your posting you compared Chinese women with Filipinas, but I cannot see any valid argument why Chinese women should be 'superior' to Filipinas (or any other Asian women).

As a fact, a lot of low level jobs in Japan are done by Chinese men and women from mainland China, legal and illegal. Almost every cleaning job in a restaurant is done by a Chinese, filling up shelves in convenience stores, factory work etc. are done by Chinese, the cheapest 'girls of the night' out in the streets near our railway station in Southern Tokyo are all mainland-Chinese.

Theft, pickpocketing, burglary, forgery etc. - about 50 percent of all foreigners arrested in Japan for crimes are mainland-Chinese.

If you really think a mainland-Chinese is 'superior' to other Asians, for sure in Japan this is not the case.

You're not employing the slightest bit of common sense Winston. So I challenge you. Show me where I said that. Quotes or it didn't happen. Show me a link to a thread.

I think I know what thread you are talking about. In that thread YOU said:
Winston wrote: How did you get the strippers to go out with you? It seems that everyone wants you Terrence. Girls seem to fall into your lap everywhere. lol
To which I replied:
The_Adventurer wrote: Not even close, and they weren't falling into my lap, they were falling into my CAR. My experiences in the US were like many on here until I bought an expensive car and grew out my hair into dreads, then everything suddenly changed like magic. Outside the US, with the exception of the Phils, I simply had one decent girlfriend in each country I lived.

(BTW I didn't buy that car to pick up women. I bought it because I learned the hard way that driving up to a studio in a Geo Metro to pitch a show would get you laughed out of the lot whereas driving up in a cool car would get you taken seriously. That, however, is another story. I will write a thread about it later in the Love, Dating Relationships etc. forum)
And in this thread we were talking about AMERICAN STRIPPERS. The reason they went with me was obviously MONEY.

Do you see the word hot anywhere? Any mention of tons of girls wanting me? Notice what was IN BOLD.

BTW when was I EVER invited to a meetup?

American schools do not teach Chinese, and I cannot memorize characters since I'm only good at thinking, not at memorizing like typical Chinese are.

When I chat with Chinese girls, I use WeChat translation tool to translate their messages into English.

No, most Asian Americans who were born in America do not speak fluent Chinese. I've known other ABC's and they also do not speak Chinese fluently. Most won't even bother speaking Chinese at all with their parents, but prefer to use English with them. The Chinese you see speaking Chinese in America came to the US when they were in their teens or adult years. Even if they come when they were 11 or 12, they can still speak good Chinese of course. But I came to the US when I was 3. Didn't you read my biography? Geez.

I never said that most Chinese girls I meet are interested in me romantically or in dating me. Most just want to be friends. But the whole process of talking to them, meeting them, connecting with them, etc. feels a lot more smooth and natural and friendly than in Taiwan or USA. That's for sure. And I do have some dating prospects including a very strong one in Shenzhen who likes me a lot. So I do have a dating life here, as well as some friendships with other girls. It's definitely a lot better than what I have in the USA or Taiwan, that's for sure. So for sure, my dating and social life is better in China.

Therefore, why did you Yohan and Terrence and MarcosZeitola compare Chinese girls to American girls? That was totally and utterly FALSE and WRONG.
Not necessarily, I was born in the US, and over the course of my lifetime, I have spent a total of less than one year in China and Taiwan combined. But I can speak, understand, read, and write Chinese quite well, both simplified and traditional. This is because I took the initiative to learn languages.

I am fluent in Mandarin Chinese, and more so than my brother and most of my ABC classmates since I only spoke Mandarin Chinese at home, and also had the motivation to learn it on my own, just as I did with Spanish.

My Chinese is native, but Taiwanese can tell I didn't grow up in Taiwan. Since I don't have a non-Chinese or Western accent, Taiwanese will often think I'm from Hong Kong or Singapore. In China, locals will often think I'm from a different province, since China is so big and has so many different accents. Imperfect but "Chinese-sounding" Mandarin is quite commonplace in China, but that will make you stick out in a small island like Taiwan, where tiny differences are easily noticed.

I usually don't like to tell Chinese and Taiwanese that I was born in the US, because then they start getting all judgemental and asking me how on earth I learned Chinese. Some of them might point to a Chinese sign and yell at me, "Hey, can you read that?" Or they might say, "Did you just understand what I said Chinese?" Shows how narrow-minded they are, since they think only people in China know Chinese. But Chinese from Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong usually are not surprised at all.

So if your Chinese doesn't have a Western twang and you don't speak too slowly or fumble around for words too much, you can pass for a Chinese from a different province.

IF you're an ABC who missed out on learning Chinese at home, don't despair. It's never too late to start learning again. Set up a plan and stick to it, and work hard to learn it just as you would with any other foreign language.

Sounds just like mainland Chinese in Taiwan.

It's not about race. It's about socioeconomic class. China is like Japan (or Switzerland or Norway) and Cambodia (or Vietnam or India) glued together into a single country. The disparities are huge and there is so much variation among the people and cultures. Chinese is also not a single race. Chinese are a mumbo-jumbo of many different peoples (Mongolic, Turkic, Austronesian, Vietic, Tibetan) assimilated throughout history.

And you know what China is in Chinese right? Zhongguo = "center of the world".
This kind of arrogance about Chinese being the best is called Han Chinese chauvinism. It dates back thousands of years and has been proven time and again to be full of crock by the Mongols, Europeans, modern anthropologists, and many others throughout history.

I agree with BlackKnight.

China might well collapse before USA.
Presently the country is hold together only with harsh control of the Communist party.

There are plenty of problems in China:

forced artificial exchange rate
severe censorship of all media
corruption everywhere
huge difference between rich and poor
threats against neighboring countries, trying to steal their land and sea and their resources
no free movement for its citizens to re-locate within China (from rural to urban areas)
travel restrictions even for own citizens 'within' China (into HongKong, Tibet, Taiwan etc.)
no legal land-ownership
overpopulation and gender imbalance
etc. etc.

I do not think this will go on for always like that, maybe China might break up into several countries?

I don't know. Simply said, the future of China is unclear. You cannot trust China.

When I was in elementary school here in CA, we had local Chinese school on weekends which I never attended because I was um, out fishing. ^_^ I learned Chinese from comic books in one hand and dictionary in another. Many of my friends from Anime convention circuit learned Japanese that way.

Back then few secondary schools offered Chinese language classes, except for the few that hosted Chinese (or Japanese or Korean) classes on weekends by local ethnic organizations. Today things are very different. My ABC cousins take Chinese class in high school and chat with friends and relatives in Chinese over the internet. In SoCal we have full immersion Chinese language programs and bilingual/trilingual programs for kids now. In another decade you might find some Hispanic young adults speaking fluent Chinese/English/Spanish here in OC:

The PRC has only been around since 1949, and they're in far better position today than Qing Dynasty that lasted 268 years.

Every couple years someone writes another "The coming collapse of China" in the US, feeding wishful thinking buyers. The way to make money is to publish another "coming collapse of China" every few years in the US, and publish "coming collapse of America" to Chinese audience in China. Many gullible buyers.

Just as all religions start as heresy and end in mythology, all nations will rise and eventually fall. Some day the PRC will pass into history, but that day is not today.

Unlike in Continental Europe, language education was neglected in USA. It is understandable - English is the standard language of international communication. If I meet a person somewhere in this world and I don't know him or her the first language I try is English. And of course there are many people in USA, who have nothing else but an English speaking background.

However if you are together with your parents living in USA as a descent of a non-English speaking nationality, it would be an intellectual waste not to use both, English (you need that in USA, no question about it) AND the language of your origin.

To know foreign languages can NEVER be a disadvantage, it can be only helpful for you in case looking for jobs, or relocation out of USA, or marriage with a foreign wife, as a tourist travelling outside of USA etc. etc.

I found Japanese native speakers not good in learning foreign languages, often not much interested to do so.

Chinese are very talented to accept several languages and to use them almost like a native speaker. Many Chinese in Malaysia speak their own dialect, something like Hakka or Hokkien, can use standard Mandarin too, are able to communicate in Malay and will talk to you in perfect English.

The best language skilled people I met in my life are Indians here in Japan, they can talk (=shout) with their wife and children in their own Indian language, changing not only the language but also their behavior towards other Indians to formal Hindi within seconds and turning to me talking in English like an Englishman from UK, and of course they also understand a lot of Japanese, they are really intelligent and successful for IT and banking related business.

There is a difference between a collapse/disappear and a collapse/return changed in whatever form that might be.

Countries rarely 'disappear', even North Korea, Somalia, Burundi etc. do still exist.

About the PRC I expect it to undergo significant changes during the next 10 years or so.

I don't know which changes, nobody knows, even not the Communist Party which is worried about how to survive.

But everybody knows, something will change or better said changes will continue. - If looking back the last 40 or 50 years, China changed a lot already economically. The question is now more about political change.

Such questions about political change are coming up in HongKong and Taiwan for example and Beijing is not happy about that. There is also rivalry within China, for example between Shanghai and Beijing questioning central authority, not to talk about Tibet and Uyghur and other special zones, religion also plays a role to question the present administration. Feminism might be the next headache for the Chinese....there is also a worrying prison population and people sent to re-education camps and so on.

Something will change for sure, but nobody knows how, when and what...
