China Drops One-Child Policy

Post by Teal Lantern »

http://www.newsweek.com/its-one-child-p ... ome-389059
The even greater demographic distortion directly attributable to the one-child policy—which the government cited in its announcement—is the rapid aging of Chinese society. About 10 percent of the population is older than 65, and that number is about to increase sharply—15 percent by 2027 and 20 percent by 2035. Fan Bao, the chief executive of China Renaissance, a Shanghai-based investment bank, says China’s future is that of the “world’s largest old-age home.”
Young people are just expected to do an about face against their conditioning.
The burdens of caring for the residents of that home will fall significantly on the one-child generation: Married couples born in the 1980s will have to care for four parents, themselves and their own children.
Four parents and their own child(ren)? How do you say "Grandma fell into the river" in Mandarin?
That’s part of the reason the recent change in policy is unlikely to have a dramatic effect on China’s population anytime soon, never mind what the government’s goals are. On WeChat, China’s pre-eminent social media platform, commentary and jokes about the policy change abounded in the immediate aftermath of the October 29 announcement. “As a member of the ‘screwed generation,’ I hereby announce my intention not to have another child,” said one Li Feng Wei, a Shanghai resident.
His intention might not be relevant. A certain scene from 'A Boy and His Dog' comes to mind.

I may be wrong but I predict this new policy will hardly if at all increase China's current birth rate going forward. And the increase will be but a 2-3 year slight upward tick.

I still anticipate it will continue to trend down over next 5-10 years ala developed NA Asia and about all other parts of the world during the more rapid stages in their economic development.

The country is already past the point of return on baby making. If policy makers wanted to encourage two child families, they should have relaxed the one child policy a decade or more ago.

That article is just riddled with tragedy. That's what happens, however, when your entire country rejects the Lord Jesus Christ for generations on end. Those people have no light in them. How they think they could ever forbid children? What would ever give them that right? And what father in his right mind commits suicide, leaving his four children penniless, except one who does not believe in our Lord? Couldn't he see? Leaving his children would leave them destitute, and without his proper guidance, they might have the most terrible lives. And for what? Because he couldnt pay a fine for having more than one child? Where does God tell people to do anything like that? See, there is a way which seems right before men, but the ends of these actions is death.

BTW, this is what feminism was made for here in the West. Remember that we are a "free" people. That means that the government can not simply rule by decree. Our rulers must use other means to discourage child birth.

Enter media propaganda against men and feminism. In a free society, rulers use propaganda to achieve the same goals.

If they can ever remove freedom from the free, they will rule by decree.

One reason why I support whatever population agenda the tinfoils keep raving about. Hindsight is 20/20, but the government gave it an honest go, which is more than I can say for some countries out there.

Why do you support depopulation?

Yes Rock is right, this won't increase China's population that much.

From what I learnt of babies while I was in China:

1. The policy had been kind of relaxed anyway, there were many rules about who could have 2+ babies. In fact, I dated very few ladies who were only child babies. Most had 2 or even 3 siblings.

2. It's got so expensive in China that many couples only want 1 or 2 babies anyway. One of my ex's sisters had one baby, and didn't want any more. When I visited Shanghai there was a whole shopping mall full of baby and kids stores. Even I was shocked at the prices of the gear in there.

3. More professional ladies are opting to have no babies at all.

4. China has entered a disastrous feedback loop where there's too many old people to look after, so there's no time for bringing up babies. I'll attest to this because taking my 90yo grandparents out to lunch a few years ago was more of a logistical nightmare than putting a man on the moon.
I was Happier Abroad for a while but Covid killed that off.

Apparently no society has ever recovered from a below replacement birth rate. I wonder whether modern societies will be any exception.
