Interbreeding between animal species usually leads to offspring less vigorous than either parent—if they survive at all. But the combination of wolf, coyote and dog DNA that resulted from this reproductive necessity generated an exception.

It's because they are the same kind of animal. Wolves, coyotes and dogs are each essentially just different breeds of canine. How do I know this? They are able to mate with each other and produce offspring which themselves can make more offspring.

This is not the evolution of a new species. It is the emergence of a new breed of a pre-existing animal. Now if a dog could turn into a bird over a few billion years, well that would be evolution. They act like when bacteria turn into more bacteria that is proof of evolution. No, it just means you exposed the bacteria to a chemical, and most of the ones that survived are now abnormal but still able to reproduce.

They are definitely using the wrong term here. Species implies it is a whole new animal. It isnt. Just animals which were already existing made a new breed without human intervention.

Some now think they came from species of wild dogs. The issue is interesting because it is an example of what used to be thought of as separate species with wildly different life strategies forming hybrids to cope with changing circumstances. Polar bears and grizzlies are another example. Perhaps this happens all the time.
