Need advice on Zamboanga

Hello guys I have been on a journey for a couple of months and now I am in Cagayan De Oro, however I really want to see Zamboanga city next. I am finding that some people say it's safe if I stay in the city and use common sense like don't go out at night, stay within city limits, blend in etc. Many other people say to avoid it, which is creating an harbinger effect on my plans to visit more of the southern regions of the islands. The city intrigues me because it looks so much similar to a Latin American city, and I love Spanish remnant cities. If I go to Zamboanga are there any places you recommend I stay or go ? Or should I just avoid this city all together head up north.

Continue first to Davao. - No need to decide now. I would not continue to Zamboanga, just my opinion.
