Could Most of us Be on the Autistic Spectrum?
Re: Could Most of us Be on the Autistic Spectrum?
OK resurrecting an old thread but has anyone actually been diagnosed with ASD?
I satisfy every criterion in the DSM-5. Like many with ASD I'm highly intelligent (top 7% of the population) but struggle to hold down jobs and relationships.
It's kind of a hard thing to self-diagnose because the most obvious things are reflected in other people.
Obvious signs though are going crazy about small changes to things. Like my stockbroker just put a pathetic BLM tribute on their site and I had to email them asking if my white money wasn't good enough for them. Also I don't like doing stuff that doesn't interest me, which has caused problems at work. If someone suddenly talks to me then I'll just repeat back whatever greeting they say... another classic sign.
I'm currently doing a "real" teaching degree so when I talk to the SEN specialists I'll see what they say about me. One of our students is ASD to the degree that they wouldn't take their coat off and the teacher had to send them out of the classroom. Then they got really into watching yoga videos which was fine but we were learning about colour blindness at the time.
I'm wondering if it's worth getting an official diagnosis because it sure would help with getting and holding onto jobs.
I don't know if I have Aspergers though or whether this is even a thing.

I loved to know what their reply to you was, they probably laughed at you and called you an utter berk.

I guess the hard things is because one gets so much benefits from this positive obsession it's hard to balance it out.xiongmao wrote: ↑October 3rd, 2020, 9:13 amOK resurrecting an old thread but has anyone actually been diagnosed with ASD?

If one needs to balance it out I think there are many ways to do it like meditation. Basically to keep the brain uncluttered so that it can deal with new information and changes.
Re: Could Most of us Be on the Autistic Spectrum?
Videos on how to tell if you have Autism or not.
1. Have you always felt different to your peers?
2. Do you worry about 'not being believed' when you tell others about yourself?
3. Do you adopt different mannerism when home alone? Things that you wouldn't do in public?
4. Do you have 'gaps' in your skillset? Some simple things others do naturally but you can't?
5. Do you like to be prepared? And dislike last minute changes?
6. Are your routines sometimes seen as ' extreme' or 'odd'?
7. Do you like to focus on ONE thing at a time? Because it take a lot of efforts to 'shift gears'?
8. Do you go through cycles of hyperproductivity? And then burnout?
9. Do you struggle to hold down jobs? Friends? Relationships?
10. Do you have trouble expressing what you really mean? Especially under stress?
11. Are there some common type of communication you find extremely difficult? or uncomfortable?
12. Are you sometimes gullible? Struggling to tell whether people are being serious or not?
13. Do you often wish people would say 'what they mean'? And get angry when they dont?
14. Are you particularly sensitive (or insensitive) to some things?
15. Does this lead to significant discomfort in some types of public places? Or in participation in social activities?
16. Do you feel like dealing with the outside world can be difficult and stressful?
17. Do you often notice things others dont?
18. Are things that are obvious to others 'often' not obvious to you?
19. Do you have uncommon interests or passions? That others just don't get?
20. Do you find dealing with people difficult? Or confusing?
21. Do you feel like it YOUR job to fit in? If you want to make friends?
22. Are you constantly worrying about 'doing the wrong thing' socially?
23. Do you often feel 'overwhelmed' by other people's emontions? (or not feel them at all)
24. Are you often surprised when people tell you what they've been thinking or feeling? Because you had no idea?
25. Have you received other labels or diagnosis? That didn't quite seem to fit?

Re: Could Most of us Be on the Autistic Spectrum?
Is this the reason some of us keep getting rejected or dumped in relationships and can't hold one for long?
Why autistic people have an endless cycle of rejection.
This is a good analogy. He says he feels like everyone else is like a big school of fish that knows where to go and move in unison somehow, but he is out of flow and not in unison with everyone else. That's how I feel too. He also mentions how everyone seems to get some kind of memo that he never gets. I've had that experience too.

Re: Could Most of us Be on the Autistic Spectrum?
Thanks Winston - beard guy is good and there's also Yo Samdy Sam but just overlook the occasional video that would not generally go down well with the HA crowd. Her experiences are very similar to mine.
If anyone wants to have a go the autism test here is good. I score 41/50 so I'd love to see what others here get.
People say the Tony Attwood Asperger's Syndrome book is good. Well actually it is a good book but I didn't really recognise myself in it. I think I have regular autism however.
I had a bit of a meltdown on my school placement this week and have kicked the ball rolling on getting a diagnosis. Diagnosis is not easy and I asked mom about my childhood. Relationship stuff is classic autism but I did learn to speak and read at a very early age with is not like autism god Temple Grandin's childhood (go seek out her long monologues on YouTube - they're fascinating). I was probably helped a lot by a tiger mom and I also went to private school until the age of 11 so I benefited from small class sizes and being taught by the wives of navy war heroes.
I teach an autistic girl (well try to - it's not easy) and she wrote "I just want to be like everyone else but I can't because of my autism".
It does have advantages though so learn to use them...

I can't select anything on that page. All the selection options are off the screen. I tried it in two browsers, including Chrome and Opera and the same thing happened. Is there another version of the test?xiongmao wrote: ↑November 13th, 2020, 8:25 amIf anyone wants to have a go the autism test here is good. I score 41/50 so I'd love to see what others here get.

Re: Could Most of us Be on the Autistic Spectrum?
This is a good video for @hypermak that explains why the problems of autistic people are not true for everyone or even the mainstream. To say so is dismissive. So it's not true that everyone experiences what autistic people experience. Hypermak thinks all the problems of aspies are normal and common, but they aren't. This guy explains why.

Re: Could Most of us Be on the Autistic Spectrum?
Just took this test:
https://psychcentral.com/quizzes/autism-test/
My score and result:
I'm not fixated on routines or numbers or dates. And I don't have a problem making eye contact with others or with reading facial cues and body language. So not all the criteria applies to me. But some of it does, like how I am too literal and am the last to get a joke in a group, and am out of sync with others, etc.
Maybe I have something else, like OCD or I am a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP).
https://psychcentral.com/quizzes/autism-test/
My score and result:
I guess I don't have autism then?Results of your
Autism / Asperger's Screening Quiz
You scored a total of 22
You have answered this autism screening quiz in a way consistent with people who don't meet the diagnostic criteria for an austism spectrum disorder (which includes what used to be called Asperger's syndrome, now considered a type of autism).
This is only a screening measure, and as such, cannot make a definitive diagnosis. Only a qualified mental health professional can diagnose mental disorders, including autism spectrum disorders.
S C O R I N G
34 & up Autism likely
30 - 33 Possible autism
0 - 29 No autism

Re: Could Most of us Be on the Autistic Spectrum?
Great overview of the traits of Aspergers. I would say about half of this or a little more applies to me.
This comment below is funny:
"What is Asperger's syndrome? Speaking from experience, it's when society is a play, and every one has the script but you. Saved ya six minutes..."
Lol. Any of you feel that way too? I have.
These comments are funny too. The irony is so true.
Why it's bad advice to tell an aspie to "be yourself".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPf9CLMG2Es
"Society: just be yourself
Also society: no not like that"
"My childhood
Me: I want freinds
Adults:Be yourself
Me: Ok
Adults: Act Normal
Me Which one is it"

Yeah, I would say you're definitely on the Asperger's syndrome Wilson, that is completely obvious. Most posters here are autistic as well. I said that a long time ago. @hypermak is uneducated so doesn't know any better
