And if you want to set up a blog with them, they still want your cell # even if you already have a google account!

make a yahoo account, then use that to make a google account and boom, no more cell phone # for texting confirmation requirement.
i don't even have a cell phone, i don't like headaches and a braintumor within 20years. nor having a trackable gps & listening device on me. when i did have a cell phone, i turned off texting because i'm not retarded and don't like to throw money down the toilet.
but more importantly i don't like pushing closer to the 'brave new world'. as if the data mining isn't accurate enough already..
if that bypass doesn't work, go to youtube and make an account using a yahoo account, and you'll get a google/gmail account made.

This is bullshit
I just did that... went to youtube with my yahoo account and created a google account.
But they're still asking for your cell # to verify your identity before you can set up gmail... WTF? I dont have a cell phone either.. and anyway IMO its kinda stupid and invasive to be forced to give out your phone # just for a web email address...
I went to blogger to try and set up a blog then... they asked me for my cell #... F&%$ you very much, google!!!!!!

LinuxOnly wrote:you can get passed it. usually they make it seem like it's required step but if you just click "back" in your browser it goes away.
make sure you've confirmed your email too..
Does that really work when you try it? It doesn't work when I do that... I'm always back at the page that asks for texting confirmation... jesus this sucks... oh well, thanks anyway
what i'm saying is there's always a way to bypass it. you don't NEED a cell phone #, but they make it seem like a requirement so those that have one are forced into it.
there are two modes.
required, and you can't make an account no matter what
or
appearance of required (but really you can just click back, or logout, log back in and they'll never ask you for a # again)
just don't get tricked by their mind games
anyways you can always get a prepaid phone or sim card or whatever there is... if it has text messaging :-/
in the US they didn't like those temporary things from the start of the mobile phone revolution because they want to spy on us 24/7 and be sure of our identity. so temporary phones aren't cheap like abroad. temporary cell #'s are a favorite of the terrorists (cia) and almost impossible to track

I can blog now but i still can't get an gmail account.. yeah Linux you were right at least partly... you can log back after logging out and then use their other products but... they require you give them your cell # if you want gmail.. f#ck that, not going to buy a cell phone just to get web email.. don't like them tracking me either

I find gmail to be fairly useful myself. I don't recall ever being asked for a cell# and i've been making a new account every year for the last couple years. Of course, i've got my cellphone sync'ed to google contacts. I've also got google voice and a google phone number configured to redirect calls to 4 different phone lines....
Personally, i like that they require people to go through a little trouble.
It typically prevents gmail accounts from being used for spamming and other unsavory practices.
Now, i also happen to have accounts with hotmail, yahoo, verizon, universities, some Chinese web portals, etc

Isn't their excuse that they want your cell phone number as a backup contact in case you lose access to your account or someone hacks into it? That's what it says when Google asks for my cell number. But it doesn't ask me to verify my cell number. It just asks if I want to use it as a backup.
That's nothing though. If you have a YouTube account now and give your name to Google Plus, YouTube will keep asking you to use your REAL FULL NAME to post comments, rather than your YouTube user name. It brings up a pop up to ask you to use your real name. You can't just click No either. The only way out of that intrusive screen is to select "Maybe next time". WTF is going on? Why are they trying to force you to use your real name as your YouTube screen name?

I used to really enjoy making YouTube playlists. Then Google bought them, and started requiring sign-in with Google ID. I have one, but it identifies me (via the name of my real estate blog and real estate email). I felt some of my playlists (some innocuous, some risquee, like national anthems of France, Soviet Union, Nazi Germany etc) would be inappropriate for my real estate clients. So I declined to sign in with Google ID. And now my YouTube playlists are frozen - can be played, but not modified or updated.Winston wrote:Isn't their excuse that they want your cell phone number as a backup contact in case you lose access to your account or someone hacks into it? That was the first restriction that I experienced that began to tell me to leave the U.S. The next was the TSA humiliation-and-irradiation program.
Using real name to post comments (as Winston mentions above) really makes their nefarious intention clear. The intention is to intimidate and suppress non-PC thought.
The irony is, I DO use my real name - which is very unusual, one of a kind in the entire world - when I comment on a political matter, e.g. a thread about armed resistance to any future tyranny. I personally don't mind the PTB knowing I don't like them. But I'll be damned if I make my interest in the rock'n'roll oldie "Who Wears Short Shorts" visible to every prospective business client or banker.
Anyway, I would really like to find a substitute for YouTube. Winston, you are now using Vimeo? What do you miss from YouTube?
