Hey guys,
So I have been thinking how the world works and how American works to an extend. It's fascinating since we talk a lot about "upward mobility". however, we talk very little about the other phenomenon "downward mobility" and "Cognitive Decline." The case below would be more of "Cognitive Evolution" as opposed to decline.
I'm going to use the example of Mexican Americans, this would be considered a "Success story"
First Generation:"The Hardworkers" They move to American since there's no way to "upward mobile" in their country. It seems in many third world countries only a small elites has access to most of the wealth and everyone else is at the margins. For instance, land owners. Also private schools are not affortable and hence they have to settle with lesser education. The Mexicans move to the US and work very hard.
Second Generations "The Risk Adverse"[/b] It seems that the Children grow up to be "average americans" they simply have a job and adapt the most to American culture. They follow all the threads like the rap music, the apps, the fast fashion. Since they saw their parent work hard to achieve a level of stability, they'll try to stay in one or two stable jobs and get a career. These are the "most average Americans." Most of the advice online is geared towards this group of people, like how to save for retirement..etc.
Third Generation "The Adventurers" it seems that this generation are the one's who are most critical of American life. Since they grew up in a more confortable social position. They are not used to having to enduring financial hardships that their grandparents endure or that their parents fear. Since its not the money that they need they are able to see through that and see what else there is in America besides money. Hence, many of them see the shortcomings of American culture like the atomize society, the difficulties dating, an air of selfishness. Hence, many of them want to travel, find "meaning" and connect to their "roots."
Therefore, some of them end up wanting to study abroad. A lot of these guys are the one's who go to the fancy liberal arts school and like criticizing America over the most mundane thing. Eventually, it isn't surprising that some of these guys end up buying a mansion in Mexico or in other third world country and moving there and sending their children to private school there since it's bilingual. They are "bohemian" for wanting to live in a third wold country but they are also "bourgeoisie" in that they are wealthy in the country they live in. They might speak a different language, be more educated, "lighter skin", but bottom line they simply have more money. Therefore, they are able to better fit in with the Elites of the given country due to their wealth.
Extra note: The above is a success story, however, I also know other stories of people of successful immigrant like Asians, Indians and others who have Phd's but who their children end up being going private school. However, private school in a first world country is seem more as a laidback. I'm not saying this is a one to one model. Rather I found it fascinating how certain groups, let themselves go.
