Study finds loneliness rising among Chinese university students

Students tend to become weaker at interpersonal communication after entering junior high school, according to the "2010 Survey Report on the Healthy Personality of Adolescent Students" released in Beijing on March 13.

About 40 percent of senior high school students often feel uneasy because of academic pressure, and nearly 84 percent of university students will feel lonely if they are neglected, according to the survey involving 3,500 students ranging from primary school pupils to university students in Beijing, Dalian, Changchun, Taiyuan, Guiyang, and Changsha.

Zhang Hanxiang, director of the China Population Communication Center (CPCC), which conducted the survey, said that it is especially difficult for only children, "left-behind" children in the countryside and children from single-parent or divorced families to develop a healthy personality.

The CPCC's "Green Apple Beijing Base," which has received support from the National Population and Family Planning Commission, the Ministry of Education and other government department, will be officially opened on April 2.

The base will offer courses in classic Chinese literature, tea ceremonies, guqin, Chinese chess as well as reading and singing. This will help young people solve the problems in the course of growing up and cultivate good psychological quality, behavioral habits and ability to adapt to the society.

Zhang said that "Green Apple" is in fact a hotline service. In the future, the center will make full use of social resources to build consultation offices in community cultural centers or family planning stations so every family can learn more about youth-specific psychological counseling, behavioral habits, sexual health and personality development.
