I have two refrigerators, two additional freezers. One is really big. The guy who sold it to us said something like, "You could put three dead bodies in there." I said something like, "Yes! That's just what we are looking for!" as a joke. We got it just as Covid-19 was ramping up before the lockdowns.
We've got cans of food, a big bag of soybeans, rice. We have ducks that finally started laying eggs. I need to buy some more feed. We still have tomatoes, lots of egg plant, and lots of hot peppers still yielding fruit and sweet potatoes in the ground, and probably some regular potatoes. There are still some leaves on the sweet potatoes we can feed to the ducks.
But we are on city water, and water is a concern. So I bought some used food-grade barrels, lots of them, to make rain barrels. I plan to give one to my dad, and turn the rest into rain barrels. To make a rain barrel, you put a hose and an apparatus to redirect some of the water from the gutter into your barrel. We plan to use the water for our garden, but also, if the water goes out, you have lots of rain water available. You don't have to fill up your bathtub before a storm. A good rain can fill up a 60 gallon barrel fast. I don't think I'm going to get the device to redirect the water. I saw someone just stick a 1 inch hose in a hole they drilled in a gutter. I found 3/4 plugs and I have 3/4 inch irrigation hose, so I plan on using that whenever I get around to setting this up. I just need to find that faucet thingies and get the hole saw and arbor (I finally found), a few more cement blocks to put them up on and get to work.
Have you guys prepped for the food shortage they are predicting? In the US, I hear there is a diesel shortage. If it gets really bad and trucks can't deliver the food, you may wish you had some food stored up.
We do have some greens plated outside. We should probably plant some more. We may do hydroponic lettuce in the garage if we can get some lights set up.
