That's because he wants more arms supplies from the West to defeat the Russians. Russia must be defeated and will be defeated.
....
When Russia loses unfortunately I think they will resort to using nuclear weapons on Ukraine and NATO member nations.
There is no other way to go for Western countries but to continue this war until the last Russian soldier is gone back home to Russia, finally removed from Ukraine, dead or alive.
If not, Russia will continue to attack other Western countries in future. Russia openly threatened Finland, Sweden, the small Baltic states, Norway etc. with military actions, makes even stupid claims that Russia begins in Portugal and ends in Alaska...
From the Western point of view the war is running nicely, not bad at all. Russian soldiers are sent back in body bags every day, plenty of Russian military equipment is destroyed.... while not even one - I say it again - not even one NATO soldier lost his life so far...
During one year, Russia did not manage to occupy more than one sixth of Ukraine, not very impressive, considering how many of their own young men died in combat...

I don't think Russia will use nuclear weapons, as it is fully aware that other countries, some of them NATO members, also have nuclear weapons.
About Russian nuclear weapons, nobody knows even if they will correctly function should they ever be used...
What we have seen so far the Russian military is a ridiculous mess.
Future - not much will go on during this month, Ukraine and Russia use this time to fight a little, but both of them are doing something to organize supplies for a major confrontation - I guess, the Russians will appear end of February in huge numbers and try as their last desperate attempt to break into Ukraine and to remove its government and take over this country as a part of Russia - but if they fail again, I think Putin will be removed from power.
However the Russian government will not change significantly, with or without Putin.

Japan is also by Russian definition a hostile country. However there is no military activity so far going on from Russia against Japan.
Energy imports from Russia have been replaced already with imports from other countries.
Just waiting, compared to Ukraine, Japan has a much larger military and better equipment and also more than 50000 US soldiers in and around Japan, so I guess the Russians will stay away from Japan...
Land/sea disputes between Russia and Japan are rather small, and only very few Russians are living in Japan.
