FIND FREEDOM SOUTH OF THE BORDER IN MEXICO
FIND FREEDOM SOUTH OF THE BORDER IN MEXICO
I have to say mexico is far freer country to live in than the us. when i think of the bullshit like being arrested for drinking in college or having the cops visit my dorm for suspisicion of pot smoking, i was a slave to the us laws and they grow more draconian by the day. in mexico life is free. i can by a beer and actually walk down the street drinking it without concern. ive seen kids as young as 14 drinking beers in bars here. porn is sold openly in the street, prostitutes roam freely without police intervention. i dont smoke anymore but my neighbors smoke openly at night on the side of the street. cocaine use is prevelent in bars with people doing lines on the table. there is no cut off for drinking in bars. drive thru liquor stores. ive seen hundreds driving with beer or michelada in hand. ive been pullover with a friend who was driving drunk he was pounding a bottle of tequilla and swivering all over the road. we paid 10 bucks and were on our way home. btw good luck finding a sober taxi driver at night. ive been in fights here never any arrests and people fight clean here. ive seen men hit their wives on the street when they get out of line no one cares here. its the way the us was in the time of my grandparents before lawsuits and police at every corner. the good olde days
Oh, the usual. I bowl. Drive around. The occasional acid flashback. (The Dude)

True, yet I see royaldude's point, though. Southern European countries like Italy, Greece, Spain and Portugal, and even parts of France, also thrive on this kind of sweet anarchy. It certainly comes from people not being so paranoid about daily life and the choices they make to entertain themselves or self-destruct, so long they don't affect a large number of unrelated parties. It also comes from an acute awareness that the justice system is so ambiguous, inefficient and often corrupted that one could carry on with the most reprehensible of conducts with little chance of being caught. And in case one is indeed caught, the judicial system is slow enough to allow him plenty of time to find a few loopholes, escape or even peacefully die.Rocky Top wrote:I'm not so sure if lines of coke, drunk cab drivers and random debauchery going on all over the place is a good selling point...
For refreshing it might appear to a tourist or short-term expat, personal freedom is a two-edged sword and may well turn into a hell for those who are undergoing the results of somebody else's personal freedom, rather than exercising theirs.
I am getting closer and closer to the idea of spending at least a couple of months in Colombia, between Medellin and a Caribbean location of choice (Cartagena tops my list), around Christmas and January. My contract with the bank I'm in right now expires mid December and with a little luck I might get an 8 or 10 week sabbatical before returning. The main reason for me to be there is to see and "feel" first hand whether Colombia can be a good option for us to move and resettle in one or two years.
And obviously, I will be most curious to see what kind of balance certain Colombian communities can strike between a paranoia-free society and the abuse of personal freedom to the detriment of the other's peace and freedom. I have a good feeling about Medellin, albeit my dream location, Cartagena, could reserve me less than pleasant surprises... We'll see...and I will keep you informed.
