Is the college bubble popping?

Post by Teal Lantern »

A women's liberal arts college in Virginia announced Tuesday that the spring 2015 semester would be its last — even though the school still has a $94 million endowment.

Sweet Briar College — located near Lynchburg, Virginia — will close "as a result of insurmountable financial challenges," the school said in a statement.
Getting out while the getting is good?
Sweet Briar administrators cited several trends that informed the decision to close, including the declining number of female students interested in all-women colleges and the dwindling number of students overall interested in small, rural liberal arts colleges.
Wait! A campus that's totes non-rapey and non-mathy, too?
Enrollment should be soaring, no?

They can charge unnecessarily high prices to young people with no work history because the government guarantees the loans. Then they can pay higher salaries to professors. When young people and their parents start to realize that degrees don't generally lead to jobs and start enrolling, how can a university cut costs? They can't let go of tenured faculty easily? They can't lower tuition and cover expenses. So they shut down. If the endowment is liquid enough, they could spend it up to keep the college operating longer.

My step father is a retired physicist and he says over the last 30 or 40 years the colleges added mostly paper pushing fat administrators who served little purpose. Very wasteful like everything the GOV touches.

Sweet Briar girls were the prettiest "imports" that came to parties at Princeton.

I never had one, only admired from afar.

I'm a bit wistful now, about the disappearance of one more vestige of the blazer-and-tie era...

I think Sweet Briar & Sarah Lawrence produced a lot of gals for debutante gatherings.
Many years ago, the Best Picture of 1999, "American Beauty", telegraphed the message of Happier Abroad to the world.

Beware of long term engagements with AWs, you may find yourself in a coffin.

AB discussion thread

BTW, despite settling down with an AW, myself, the warning is still in effect.
