U.S. Sailor Confesses To Rape in Okinawa!

One of the two U.S. sailors arrested in connection to the rape of a woman in Okinawa has confessed to the alleged crime, according to police on Japan's southernmost island.

Seaman Christopher Browning and Petty Officer 3rd Class Skyler Dozierwalker were arrested early Tuesday by Okinawan authorities shortly after a local woman, 27, said she had been sexually assaulted and robbed in front of her apartment building.

The reported victim did not know the men, and initially ignored their advances outside a bar where the sailors had been drinking, Japanese media reports said. The men followed her into an empty street, where they allegedly attacked her, and slashed her neck.

Police spokesman Yoshitaka Maeshiro, would not elaborate on the extent of her injuries, said Dozierwalker had confessed to the crime while Browning has denied the allegations.

The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo acted swiftly in response to the allegations, putting out a statement overnight from Ambassador John Roos, expressing "concern" and vowing to cooperate "fully with the Japanese authorities in their investigation."

He apologized to Okinawa Gov. Hirokazu Nakaima, a staunch critic of U.S. military presence on the island, who joined the Foreign Ministry in lodging a formal protest against the incident.

Addressing reporters, Roos assured the Japanese public he "understood their anger."

"The entire United States government, including our military, will continue to work our hearts out to earn the trust of the Okinawan people and the people of Japan," he said.

Washington's response speaks to the sensitivity of the alleged crime, on an island that's home to more than half of the 50,000 troops based in Japan. The heavy presence has long been a point of contention between residents and the military community. The anger reached a boiling in 1995 when three marines were arrested in connection with the rape of a 12-year-old girl. U.S. military authorities took the men into custody then, sparking mass anti-U.S. demonstrations from Okinawans outraged they weren't prosecuting the case.

A few weeks ago, residents demonstrated against the deployment of tilt-rotor Osprey aircraft. Local government officials said the aircraft posed a safety risk after two recent Osprey crashes that recalled the aircraft's shaky safety record early in its development.

In a meeting with the minister of defense, Nakaima called the alleged incident "senseless" and demanded the U.S. do more to "discipline its servicemen."

Under the Status of Forces Agreement between the United States and Japan, Japanese authorities are holding the sailors and have primary jurisdiction because it involved a Japanese national. The Navy's Criminal Investigative Service is also conducting its own investigation and providing support to Okinawan authorities.

A Navy official said the sailors are based at Fort Worth Naval Air Base in Texas and were temporarily deployed to Japan as part of the crew of a Navy cargo plane.

The plane's crew had flown a mission from Atsugi in Japan to Okinawa, but was required to stay the night on the island because of crew rest requirements.

The alleged incident is said to have occurred during their stay.

Crap like this happens all the time with the U.S. military overseas! When I was stationed in the U.K, American troops would start fights with the Brits, rape and sexually abuse women, and get into tons of DUI's and car accidents, which infuriated the local population. It got to the point where the locals would fight back against Americans--and you even had bars and restaurants that refused service towards any Americans and skinhead groups wanting to fight American soldiers when they were off base.

Huh...This is still going on. i left japan while i was in the military back in 2006. one thing is for sure. this "rape" and "sexual assualt" thing. remember U.K. girls will say anything against men so they can get attention. they will cry "rape" and so forth.

as for the japanese girls. it is the same damn thing. but the difference is japanese women will do it out of spite. alot of japanese in general hate other ethnicities. i remember this very vividly. so they will cry "rape" because they are vindictive.

I remember when i was pursuing a japanese lady on the military base. nothing sexual. and nothing disrespectful. i just kept pursuing her. And she changed departments twice. which was odd to me. Finally a friend came to me and told me she was going to file "sexual harrassment" on me. so i stopped doing it.

this is just one example of my own experience with japanese woman. the japanese women off base where very very good to me. it was okay to see them everyday at their job and just talk to them. they were fine with it. but that one japanese girl on base had "woman's rights". so it was easy to cry "sexual harrassment". again i stopped pursuing her so it never happened. the american girls must have screwed her mind up about rights. oh well...

i got into a fight with a japanese guy off base. ofcourse i was sent to a holding cell. but guess what....he was never jailed. it was ME that was put it all because i was a american sailor. oh boy the japanese love to hate on people don't they....

my master chief was worried about me and bought my ticket out of there. i paid her back. very thankful she helped me. ofcourse right after that i went into military restriction. ugh man...my time in the military was rough.... hahahahahaa....

i put this out because you have to be careful of the news and what they say about sailors. not all of them are bad. some are yes i know. but some of them are innocent !!!.

ssjparris, only those who realize what they're doing and actually try to get out are innocent. I'm glad you actually made the right decision.

Stuff like this happens all the time. While some will cry foul, western military folks are known to always abuse their power, as power corrupts the weakest of men. The stuff those people do make me sick.

ssjparris you don't think maybe it's the UK / American armed forces presence that they don't like??? rather than the general hate of other ethnicities? I've always found it to be pretty bold of them to just be able to set up base in any desired country.

You're right Renata, that has a lot to do with it! Other countries are resentful of our presence in their countries and the savage behavior of many American troops abroad. As a former military servicemen, I've seen it all--and more! That's why I believe (like Ron Paul) we should bring our troops home from all over the world.

Most soldiers are brutal in behavior. When the Japanese were in other countries, countries they were supposed to protect during the SE Asian Coprosperity Sphere times, they raped and killed and did all sorts of horrible things. And they had comfort women, too. This is why most Asians hate the Japanese until now.

American military been doing this for years. I mean it has happened to people in American for years. Look at slavery... rape is a white American past time. Check historical records if you don't believe me.
