Not that I agree with 90% of what the Religious Right says, they are mostly right around issues of marriage and fidelity. Do you disagree? Do we have a culture that almost encourages women to play the take me as I am card and gain as much weight, look sloppy and dress too casually too often? Even Gerald Celente complains about the over casual nature of American life. There is a blog with pictures Director Stanley Kubrick took when he was a child/teenager in the Depression. All the women looked good, dressed nicely, wore dresses almost exclusively.
The push of masculinity onto women by encourage them to smoke was Edward Bernays idea -
The original question perhaps was more about his father being largely uninterested in the boy's mother for other reasons.
