The largest carnival in the world is Rio
The second largest carnival in the world is the Tenerife (where I'm from) carnival. Not a lot of people know that. It's going on right now.
The 3rd largest is Notting Hill (London, UK)
You'd think they'd all be really good. The Notting Hill carnival is the biggest load of crap ever. I've been a few times (but not lately, and I don't intend to ever go again), and it's basically just a bunch of people walking down the street with a can in their hand. It's really not much more than that. And it finishes really early, about 9pm (it might even be earlier now).
Look at the contrast :

Notting Hill : (Yes, on the surface, it looks like a carnival. But look closely. It's bullshit. It's the 3rd biggest but it most certainly isn't the 3rd best)

The moral of the story is that in english speaking countries, they can't do anything right. Anything resembling true culture is alien to them. The carnival itself isn't even an english thing, it was brought here from the Caribbean. They make a good effort but it's like putting makeup on a pig. It just doesn't go.
I think back to when I used to go to Notting Hill. With each year, it became harder and harder to justify going, until I gave up. It feels very fake. Sure, a lot of people are smiling, but that's it. It's hard to put into words but it doesn't feel like people are having a truly great time. I don't feel like I could approach anyone, and that tells me all I need to know. It's the same during christmas or new year, when people say happy christmas or happy new year. You can tell it's insincere, in the same way that a really drunk person will act very friendly but you can tell they're f***ed up inside.

Try living in Brazil, these people down here are murderous and criminal minded, they will kill you for a dollar down here, and there is no protection what so ever.the police are a bunch of corrupt buffoons. Yeah and you have people who don`t like Americans or gringos and will rob or hustle you every chance they get.Ask the couple who was kidnapped robbed while the boy friend had to watch his girl get rapped in Rio and they where on their way to see the Christ the redeemer statue..really you are not safe visiting one of Brazil`s most famous tourist attractions?Johnny wrote:http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthrea ... t100114947
