Why do Americans smile so much?

They're always doing it, and expect you to do so as well. However, they might smile and backstab you. When abroad, they get upset(some of them) if you don't smile in the subway with them. Why is that? Smiles mean nothing to them. Why?

1. Americans do NOT smile a lot.

2. Smiles in the western world are contrived. People are expected to force themselves to smile because of some unspoken social rule. In non-western cultures, when people smile, it's a GENUINE smile that radiates from their inner joy.

3. For example, when a chinese woman smiles, you can see that she is happy. When a western women smiles, it's not quite the same...it's more of a conscious effort.

We are all in the same situation the English people have been in for centuries, can you smile genuinely for any length of time about what is going on in this country?
