Snowden granted 1 year extendable asylum in Russia

Looks like he will be eligible to eventually naturalize there too!

I feel that he would have been far better off in South America. Now he "owes" the Russian government something and they are going to keep him under tight lock and key monitoring everything he does and bleeding him for intel. Plus down the road he can still be handed over as a bargaining chip for some other geopolitical reason.

They will never hand him over to the US. There is not enough money in the world for them to accept that. In Russian politics, money does not buy everything.... Their leaders have more money than they can spend themselves. China is very similar as well in that respect.

Don't believe me? Ask that oil baron they put in prison. Respect still carries enough weight. The US has none with anyone right now. That latest leak has the world furious right now. He will be fine as long as he keeps his mouth shut and does not bite the hand feeding him for now.

It's not money i'm thinking of. Russia would do an even trade for someone who they really want. There's quite a few people on Russia's shitlist too.

Snowden needs to do everything he can to stay in Russia. Going to Latin America would be foolish. He needs to think about the future. What about 20 years from now? Venezuela could have a government friendly to the U.S. In a small country he will eventually be tracked down by the Americans. Russia is his only hope of staying safe. They are the only ones big enough to withstand pressure from the thugs who have taken over the US.

I believe you are correct. He will be used as a bargaining chip by the Russian later on down the road.

That's what i was thinking. He should become a citizen of Russia as soon as possible and then renounce his US citizenship. This should strengthen his legal standing. Additionally, he needs to cultivate the good will of the Russian people to make it expensive for a politician to deport him. He really has to make things happen. With the irreversible progress of globalization, America could really make it hurt economically for a small Latin American country to oppose its will.

They do not extradite their own. There are several Russian bank stealing hackers that have stolen MILLIONS of dollars that are currently wanted by the US and maybe 20+ other countries right now. They refuse to extradite any of them. This has been going on for years too. Not only that, but Russia has no legal means to extradite ANYONE to the US for any reason whatsoever.

Problem with Latin America is that most of those countries are too small and also too close to the USA. CIA could maybe send someone in to kill his ass down there. And it wouldn't be very safe to travel to other countries. So if he went to say Ecuador, he would be stuck in fairly small area. The only place I would wanna live in SA if I were him is Brazil. It's big, relatively powerful, and has some great climate and plenty of my kinda wimminz lol. I like Colombia too but it just has way to close a relation with the US plus it's so damn near geographically.

At least Russia is huge and far.

From what I can tell, Snowden's dad advised him (in a tv interview) to stay in Russia, and he shortly accepted Russian asylum and left the airport.

The father specifically made reference to the lack of long-term security in Latin America, as evidenced by the way the EU countries forced down the Bolivian president's official aircraft at the behest of the U.S.

I think Snowden was unsure what to do, and his dad's words helped him make up his mind.

Re Russian girls - hah yes. His lawyer stated that Russian girls already were seeking to meet him, but that Snowden was still thinking about his girlfriend.

Again, wise young man. No need to humiliate gf publicly at this point, and no need to start U.S. allegations that he did it all for p***y.
