Anyone familiar with the city of Guiyang in China?

I read some audition notices, announcing openings for Principal, 2nd and 3rd Horn in the Guiyang Symphony Orchestra. I might send my resume and take an audition here if I get invited. Anyone been here or know the Guizhou province in general?

Well, Ghizhou is one of the more underdeveloped provinces of China. I was told that many ethnic minorities live there. It's also very humid in that part of China (actually, Southern China tends to be really humid and hot in general, LOL). Guiyang is the capital of Guizhou province. I did ask one of my co-workers about the place, and she said it is one of the more picturesque parts of China, but it is poor. From what I gather about Guiyang, though, it does look like a nice city.

Nice to see that you're interested in southwestern China. How much music do you do, man? Although kai is the established China specialist for a reason, one little known fact is that certain HA members have spent considerable time in Asia and China.

Once you dive into the vast world of non-coastal China, your perspective on life may change. It's a significant leap from middle America and I'm not sure if it's the best choice for you, deasil. But if you're all for jumping in head first, then don't let me hold you back dude!

As for the province of Guizhou itself: plenty of specifics to discuss, which I might go into more later. In more ways than one, it's quite far away from the revved-up urban buzz of Bsgh, and Guiyang seemed to be a temperate, relaxed city. Just don't expect to encounter a ton of Mandarin speakers, and definitely don't expect to meet many English speakers, haha. That said, I have my fair share of juicy southwestern China stories, and Guizhou definitely figures on that rather compelling list.

If you elaborate further on what you're looking for in an overseas destination, it may be easier to find a good spot for you. Good luck with your search!

Falcon, I'm delighted to hear that you've been to the Forest City as well. Somehow I get the feeling that we've had similar experiences in China, especially with all our inland travel in the southwest. It's great to see another poster on here who still travels for the sake of travel and not women!

They ARE kind of tiring me out. I get bombarded with missed phone calls (at least 10 on many days!) and online messages every single day from my desperately clingy lady friends: Indonesians, Filipinas, Thais, and even one Mexicana who's still talking to me. There's the constant "Why won't you talk to me? I miss you!" (Umm, I'm at work, and talking on the phone at work doesn't make a good impression.)


Back in the US: You try to get the ladies, the ladies run away.
But outside the US: The ladies try to get you, YOU run away!

American women seem like they might fight to get away from me. Here, ladies are fighting for my attention.

My wife just says that it is a very poor part of China. I have never been there myself.
