Going to the Philippines in March - need advice

Post by Sergey »

Hello everyone,

I've been a long time lurker but decided to join recently. I read Winston's book a month ago but I can't remember when I found this website.
A little bit about me. I'm a 25 year-old immigrant from Russia who has lived in the U.S. for the last six years. Although I enjoy doing what I do for living (IT) and being able to buy anything I need, I don't really feel genuine connection with Americans. I have a few acquaintances, but I would call them my friends. A year ago I got out of a relationship with a Russian girl and has been single ever since.

I tried meeting girls where I live but there is always something weird and I can't even get myself interested in any of them. First, I consider somewhat attractive only 5 to 10% of the local girls and they are never single. The others are either plain looking, overweight, or have kids. Second, most people are not curious at all and there is no point in approaching them. May be it's the general population here (I live in a very small college town in Nebraska) or the language barrier (although I consider my English to be pretty good), I don't know.

I was in Russia about two months ago and realized that if I came back, my life would probably be different, however... it's just depressing when it's cold and gray for the most part of the year. So, I decided to check out the Philippines. I'm only going there for a week but I hope it will be enough to find out if I could consider relocation.

I already joined FilipinoCupid.com and DateInAsia.com but I'm clueless when it comes to online dating. A lot of girls message and show interest in me but the conversations are kind of boring and bland. And what's up with that "Who is interested in me"? How come there are twice as many people interested in me as there are who viewed my profile? Do they just click without ever reading profiles?

I will be in Manila area for a week so I need recommendations on what to do, where to stay and so on. I'm also considering visiting Angeles City for a couple days at the end of my trip but I'm hoping to get some action without getting involved with hookers. I'll be happy if I can meet fellow expats there and have a couple of drinks.

This will be an ongoing post as I'll probably share some of my experiences without explicit details.

P.S. By the way, if any of you want to practice your Russian, feel free to message me :)

Good luck!

I don't see any reason to go to Russia - most Eastern Europeans are here in Western Europe for a better life!

If you're only in the Phillies for a couple of days just stick to hookers it took me a whole fortnight in Bangkok just to get my first date. So just go in a bar and find some fun ladies.
I was Happier Abroad for a while but Covid killed that off.

Xiongmao, the reason why I don't want to use hookers is because "it's just business, nothing personal". Prostitutes in the U.S. and Russia have these rules that shouldn't be broken, like no kissing on the lips, no p***y-eating, no cuddling after sex and so on that it's just not worthwhile. How is it in the Philippines?

Btw, how is Bangkok compared to Manila? I've contemplated going there (or anywhere in the Latin America) instead but I heard it's better to go to the Philippines as most people can speak English.

You don't need the internet to meet girls in the Philippines. Just approach them in the shopping mall.

I have a few questions:

Is it better to buy summer clothes here in the U.S. or wait until I'm in the Philippines?
What kind of a cellphone would you guys recommend? I have a dual standard CDMA/GSM phone + a GSM phone that takes two SIM cards.
What cellphone provider is the best?

Your time is so short. Since you're only 25, why not instead go to Thailand. You could spend half your time around backpacker area of Khaosan trying to hook up with tourists (Euros, Koreans, Taiwanese, etc.) or farang curious Thai gals who you might encounter around there. Then spend the other half in Pattaya where there are huge numbers of Russians you could perhaps bond with and get the inside scoop. Wherever you go, do some online work to meet a few girls wherever you are going who could possibly meet up with you while you are there. In such a short period, you need as many chances as possible.

You just need an unlocked GSM phone. Quad band will cover all frequencies.

Yea man, just go to the mall or any public area (university or town square), look for ladies in groups, and just introduce yourself. The old "can you help me load my phone (cell phone prepaid minutes)" works like a charm.

1. Stay away from Angeles City if you are not into hookers.

2. If you have not bought the ticket yet, find a way to make the trip longer, at least 3 weeks or so. The flights will put you a little off-kilter. Then by the time you are starting to get a little bit of a feel for the place it will be time to leave. I once made the mistake of going to PI for one week, never again. If you need more leave time from work, wait until you have it.

Thanks for the advice Devil Dog. I wish I could stay longer than a week but I would have to wait another 6 months to save up for a longer vacation...

1- Stay away from hookers/P4P. There is no need for it. The Philippines is loaded with nice girls who would gladly show you around their city. All you have to do is feed them.

2- If you state in your dating site profile that you will be visiting soon, girls will be lining up to be your personal tour guide.(See point 1)

3 -One week is really not enough time to fully enjoy yourself there. If you have a chance, don't hesitate to jump on a plane and visit another part of the Philippines.

4- Bring insect repellent and ear plugs. I don't know about you but every time I travel to Asia, I always get placed near a couple with a crying baby. The ear plugs will come in handy while trying to sleep.

Array9,
thanks for the tips. I already changed my dating profile ;)
So far I only met one very sweet girl. She seems to be almost middle class. She doesn't work but some of her family members live in the U.S. She wants to only live in the Philippines though. I would say she is probably a 9. Definitely going to meet her if everything goes well.

I got another crazy idea. I've wondering what country to choose to study for a Master's degree. If I like Philippines, I could consider adding it to my list. Need to research it more...

A few questions about FilipinoCupid. I have seen some girls messaging me and later their messages just vanished from my inbox and I can no longer find their profiles. Does it mean they were scam artists and were banned from the site? Or did they simply delete their profiles for some reason? Also, it still bothers me that I have twice as many girls interested in me as the number who actually viewed my profile. Kinda weird.
