Get married or face jail time

Post by Teal Lantern »

Which would you have chosen?

http://www.kltv.com/story/29721876/judg ... -jail-time
An East Texas couple says their choice to marry when they wanted to was taken away by a criminal court judge.

In July, a Smith County judge sentenced Josten Bundy to get married to his 19-year-old girlfriend as part of his probation, which also included writing Bible verses and getting counseling.

The court case stemmed from a February altercation between Bundy and the ex-boyfriend of his girlfriend, Elizabeth Jaynes.

“[The ex-boyfriend] had been saying disrespectful things about Elizabeth, so I challenged him to a fight,” said Bundy. “He stepped in and I felt like it was on and I hit him in the jaw twice.”

Bundy said the ex-boyfriend did not require medical attention, but pressed assault charges.
If Bundy declined to do the probation, he would be sentenced to 15 days in jail.

“He offered me fifteen days in jail and that would have been fine and I asked if I could call my job [to let them know],” said Bundy. “The judge told me ‘nope, that’s not how this works.’”
Maybe he really needed to keep that job.

I know they were young and naïve, but acquiescing the judges demand was foolish. That was way out of his jurisdiction. If they'd have thought it through, he could have gone to the judge and said he asked her to marry him before the deadline and she and her family refused to do so within that window of time, but they have a wedding date set for the future. After all, the judges orders were not something he could fulfill all by himself.

There need to be some laws punishing and censoring judges who make really foolish illegal decisions, even on the Supreme Court level like we see this year.

Ghost: Was thining about this earlier. It seems almost like a muslim cleric ordering people to get married, doesn't it? Not for nothing, but if a father was trying to bully his daughter into marrying someone it would be seen as an affront & rightly so. This is something that is orchestrated third-party & this type of third party usually won't shut down when prompted. This type of third party also tends to attack through proxy, sometimes only to accomplish that as a specific act.

I notice more & more that they (policy implementation workers) try to simply comport the situation in one way or another & frequently rely on people's concern for what would happen if they were trying to vitiate a hostile party's actions through this forging of situations. They go & push people around that are worrying about getting pushed around in & of itself. Wouldn't suprise me at all if they told people to start doing jumping jacks & they would act like they were the victim if they didn't do it.

Just to say it out loud: Supposing someone decided to forcibly marry a judge? To just TAKE that judge as a spouse or to hand them to someone else? Maybe the baliff would be subjected to the same treatment?
