People in U.S. suburbs are very snobby
I live in the suburbs of Houston and family members, as well as other people I know who live around here, tend to be condescending, arrogant, and competitive. They feel the need to prove that they are smarter and more successful than others and regularly judge and put others down. When you talk to them, it isn't uncommon to experience snickering or smirking. They generally have sour attitudes and almost always seem pissed off about something.
Life in the suburbs is so boring and the people are mainly concerned with making money, so I figure that's why they are that way. It's a hollow and miserable existence, only caring about material things and one-upping the people around them.

This is the problem in many places not only in USA, but also in Europe. It is a life full with mistrust against any other person nearby. Plenty of crimes of any kind. A flood of illegal immigrants makes it even worse. The economic situation is also not the best and everybody tries to earn money 'somehow'.
This situation is getting even worse during cold wintertime. I also blame feminism partially, as it damaged seriously the dating scene between men and women.

Welcome to America! Americans get less days off per year to have a life than any major country in the world. America is a work country. All Americans can be proud of is their job and their material objects. Oh, they can raise over-protected kids too.statnerd wrote: ↑March 10th, 2019, 7:33 amI live in the suburbs of Houston and family members, as well as other people I know who live around here, tend to be condescending, arrogant, and competitive. Suburban life f***ing blows. I see near zero appeal in living 1+ hour from a major city center just to have a little more land and a bigger house.
I almost went crazy when I visited my parents a while back, who live in a typical run of the mill suburb that you can't tell apart from the thousands of others like it.
You need to drive literally everywhere. Coffee? 10 minute drive. McDonalds? 10 minute drive. The only thing I could see if I walked outside was an endless pool of cookie cutter homes. Streets were deserted and sidewalks totally empty. One night I googled "restaurants near me". Applebees, TGI Fridays, Outback Steakhouse, Pizza Hut - nothing but the usual shit. Endless strips malls all filled with the same f***ing stores like GNC, Dollar Store, Subway, Dry Cleaning etc.
I don't know what it is that people enjoy about this lifestyle. After working or school or whatever, you drive home and then just stay there. I've lived in Asia, South America, and have spent some limited time in large European cities and man those places were hustling and bustling. I could walk or take the bus/train to just about anywhere. People hang around, eating street food, joking, at all hours of the night. Tons of unique mom and pop stores and restaurants. Kids running around.
And yes, so many suburbanites are all about one-upping others. Constantly moving to larger houses, buying more expensive cars, handbags, lavish vacations.

Living in the suburbs is about as exciting as watching cement dry. You have to drive everywhere, public transportation is pretty much non existent. Everyone hides in their houses and people never socialize with their neighbors.

I have never thought of "having to drive everywhere" as a bad thing. It's better for there to be more space in general, rather than living in a congested area. I also am against this belief that you must drive, that you can't ride a bicycle.
The suburbs are better than living in cities because you are away from homeless people, drug dealers, etc. You are away from adverse people who will annoy and disturb you in different ways.
Don't take a life in the suburbs for granted. If it's boring, that's good because you are not experiencing violence, threats, or theft, etc. from intoxicated, deranged, addicted bad people.
That being said, the suburban lifestyle is a scam though, similar to an urban lifestyle. To live in population-dense locations is overrated. People are overrated. In order to be pretty happy, all you need is one female. The cost of real estate, restaurants, etc. is extremely high in highly populated areas. If you choose to live this lifestyle, you have to work hard for it. I think most people do not actually ask themselves if they want to live in the suburbs, but they may have been born there already and have lived a middle-class lifestyle their whole lives. If they were more freethinking, they would decide to live in a rural area, where the land is cheap, and there are few options for restaurants and entertainment, therefore, the cost of living is low, which demands much less of you, lowers your stress, and you never have to stress out about paying the mortgage, car loan, student loans, etc.
Maybe a lot of people aren't aware that they can buy land in a remote location for a few thousand dollars. Much of it may come from a fear of what other people will think if they were to live such a lifestyle. In some places, there is no zoning or building codes, so you can live in a tent on your land. Most people would be too embarrassed to live in such a way, I think. They would care too much about what others would think. If you would be able to disconnect totally from what others may think, then you could be happy because you would not have to slave away each day just to pay for a roof over your head.
Women in general demand to live in a house though, so the man must earn the income in order to acquire and maintain a house. It's stupid because doing so doesn't really make the woman happy anyway. She will take for granted the house, and find something else to complain about, no matter what.
The only way to be happy is to live very simply, in a tent, trailer, etc. in a rural area, and then meet a female who would be content living that way. Then, at least you could easily afford the lifestyle and not feel like you are literally a slave and wasting your life working each day.

Re: People in U.S. suburbs are very snobby
What you describe is exactly what Chicago's suburbs are like! People in Chicago are anti-social, rushed, and they don't even socialize much while riding the El and on CTA buses. But travel west into the far suburbs such as Downers Grove, Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Naperville, Batavia, and so forth, even into the satellite communities such as Sycamore, DeKalb, and Yorkville, and those people have a zero tolerance policy for strangers. They're like that type of cat that, when you approach it, it does that repetitive growling and hissing, and if you try to pet it, it attacks you. The outer suburbs and satellite communities are safe to where I've felt safe riding through on bicycle at even 12 midnight and at no time did I ever feel like something crimewise could possibly happen, and yet I've seen people in those same neighborhoods acting in broad daylight like they're in East St. Louis.
