Plane ticket to Manila - is it really that bad? If so, then what should I do?

A few weeks ago I booked a plane ticket to Manila on impulse, for a 10 day stay. But I am reading comments on reddit saying Manila is really horrible and that no one should go there. Is it really that bad? And if so then what should I do? My plane ticket is non refundable. Is there anywhere near Manila that I could drive to?

Manila is a complicated city. It really depends on what you're looking for and how much you are prepared to stomach the very visible signs of extreme socio-economic inequality parading before your eyes at every street corner.
