Interesting that the examples you used of our superior Western culture were created by: a 65-year old rocker (Bowie); and a 70-year old filmmaker (Scorcese - Boardwalk Empire).
Most modern, youth-oriented music is insipid whether it's created in the RP or the West. As I mentioned earlier in the thread my gfs favorite singer is Adele who is equally popular (and equally awful) in the West. My 12-year old loves her as well, so I get to barf at her warblings often.
As to movies, I was surprised that my gf had seen most Hollywood stuff over the past decade. Course you could also make the case that that's all awful and I won't argue, but tastes in popular films are similar and it's not the RP's fault that Hollywood makes lots of crap. In fact if you look at the International Movie box office you'll discover that the top movies in RP are similar to those here. Currently #1 is Men in Black 3, #3 is Avengers, etc.
As to the OP's original question it of course depends on what your hobbies and tastes are. If your notion of easy listening is Eminem or your idea of a mellow night at the movies is Lars Von Trier or Scorcese's Taxi Driver - well maybe she won't be able to share.
But if you simply want to dance and share some of your passions with her, I think you'll do fine.
